Health & Service
I moved to Reno in December 2021 from Montana. Prior to that time, I lived in the western Sierra Nevada’s just outside Yosemite. Over these past ten or so years, I have developed a dry eye condition that seems to be getting worse. I do wonder how much global warming is contributing to the lack of humidity. I am sharing this simply because my blog will be short today. I am struggling with screen time and simply the light. I am looking forward to my eye appointment at the end of the month.
My greatest joys come from my boots being on the ground; engaging with others who need someone to listen to them, someone to support them, and someone to give them hope. Today I attended a Drag Queen Storytime at my church: Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Good Shepherd is a Reconciling in Christ Church. Our belief is that God values and embraces each person, the spirit gives a diversity of gifts for the common good, and that Christ calls us to work for justice. I have felt accepted at Good Shepherd as I do not have to fear judgement over my many marriages. I am grateful to have found the church and the warmth of Pastor Scott and its members. Getting back to the Drag Queen Storytime…
Miss Ginger is a wonderful storyteller. The humor and commentary brought a smile to my face. Something I do not do often enough; smile that is. I laughed and appreciated the spontaneous comments from the children and the humor that Miss Ginger provided that the adults in the room quickly grasped. I also had the opportunity to learn about Our Center. Our Center is Northern Nevada’s LGBTQ+ community center. And, while I have been in Reno, I have struggled to find a community that might benefit from my experience in special education parental rights and supporting adolescents who are struggling due to trauma, abuse, and abandonment. Yes, I am heterogenous. However, I have always sought to support those that society sees as the least of these; Matthew 25:40-45.
I have submitted an inquiry to Our Center to see if I can provide inclusive parent workshops on the topic of special education parental rights and possibly share my story with adolescents. I will let you know what I find out!
I am now going to shut down my computer and take a break from screens for the rest of the day. Please say a prayer for my eyes. I need to get my house sold so I can go and spend some time on the coast so my eyes will feel better.
Blessings ~ julie
