I grew up in an affluent suburban area. My parents were professionals and successful in their own right. I am the middle child of three – older brother and younger sister. My brother consistently bullied, threatened, and manipulated me since early childhood and began sexually abusing me during my adolescent years. My parents did their best but were not aware of what was happening under their roof while they were at work. My sister had a much stronger personality than I did and found ways to belittle and put me down. My mom often invalidated my feelings, concerns, and hurt. For the past 60 years, I have believed this was how I was to be treated; unworthy, invalidated, voiceless, and to be seen not heard. So, I have repeatedly stepped into personal relationships that were more of the same. I have been controlled, verbally abused, neglected, shunned, blamed, shamed, gaslighted, and have had my life threatened.

Redeem Thyself is a support group. It provides a platform for women to share their stories and to learn from one another. It believes women should not feel alone in their journey towards self-love and healing. Redeem Thyself is not a platform to express negativity or hostility towards those who have caused harm. It is a place to reflect on where we are now and the steps we are taking to move beyond this past. Redeem Thyself supports self-love, self-compassion, self-kindness, and a positive outlook for a better tomorrow. It is a place where we can support and serve others by sharing our own stories and how we overcame the challenges we have faced.

I welcome you to this special place with the hope that we can all find self-love and healing.

Mission

Story

As with many abused and traumatized women, are stories are life-long, deep, complicated, and overwhelming. And, yet, they are also simple. The simple fact is that I was abused and tormented as a child and throughout my adult life I have continued to be attracted to men who treat me in the same manner. On the flip side of the coin is my professional life where I have flourished, touched lives, given and received, and thrived. The one piece of my story that I cannot make sense of is why so many of us are able to be resilient despite the abuse and trauma we have incurred. Why did I not go down a dark road. As I share my story, I am hoping to find an answer. If I can find the answer, then maybe I can help others find a way out of what could have been.

Vision

Redeem Thyself will provide a social media presence where professional women who have experienced trauma and abuse can share their stories, feel supported, and learn from one another. Redeem Thyself hopes to inspire women to recognize and acknowledge their abilities as professional and accomplished women and to embrace those abilities in every aspect of their lives.

I have been journaling off and on for years, and in the last few years I have started imagery work. And, as my amazing daughters filled my life with, I have captured much of my adult life in pictures. I have taken my journaling, photos, and reflective imagery work to begin to make made sense of all I have experienced. Via my blog page, I hope to start to articulate my life’s journey in hopes that it will be able to support the work you are doing. So, be sure to follow my blog and sign up for announcements. And, you can also follow my thoughts @redeem_thyself and on FB.
